At a glance
Painter, quill pen draughtsman, muralist, printmaker, theatre designer and teacher. Alicia Boyle was predominantly known as an abstract marine and landscape artist. A rather solitary figure, Alicia Boyle’s work was influenced by Surrealism and the light, colour and landscapes of Greece, Ireland and Spain. Her vivid subjects grow from an intimate experience of reality that borders on fantasy.
Although not associated with the mainstream of contemporary European art, she has produced a significant body of work that with a rekindled interest in figurative and thematic painting has gained her well-deserved recognition. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and spent her early years in Limavady, Northern Ireland. Boyle passed away in Dublin, Ireland in 1997. Boyle summarised her life and work in 1988 by saying “It’s been a journey through line and colour.”
